twfowler,

re: AMD does have reliable products. Actually they have had reliable products for awile but less reliable support for thier chips.

Reliability is a start, but without the 2 and 4 processor support and lower heat properties AMD is a poor technical choice for a company with a reputation for quality like Sun.

Sun has a lot of experience with Solaris on x86. They've failed at getting the developer community to port from Sparc to Solaris x86. I believe this is because they never created a Sun branded PC. Now that the vendors are moving to Linux with or without Sun, Sun's moving to Linux. In the UNIX world Sun is the undisputed king of 3rd party applications, Linux is just beginning. I suppose Sun could add value to Linux by providing some tools to help developers of Solaris applications quickly port to Sun's Linux. But exactly what would compel anyone to buy a Sun PC?

Eventually those applications will be on Linux anyway.
