But there is profit to made on the downside too.... I find people on SI often have really long term vision or very short term visions. The former are the "let's short everything overvalued" and "Greenspan has destroyed the economy" types as well as the permabull "stocks for the long-term they only go up" types. The latter don't have any kind of roadmap at all, just day trading. I guess some people can make money that way.

There aren't that many that combine long and short term vision.

On the other hand I am trying to develop models that make lots of money without any vision at all. I just ran one on the 24 Sep - 8 Feb segment and it doubled the account trading the NDX with no leverage. It was a very simple time series model... I was surprised. Need to test a longer span on that one. It doesn't need any special knowledge beyong standard time series analysis to do it so I'd be surprised if it works. It wasn't getting the size of the daily moves right but got the direction right pretty often.
