Sun, I've been watching Japan too and thinking that at some point there may be a bounce similar to the one there in mid 98. Me, I'm mostly a lurker here (I think Earlie spotted me) but do post sometimes though not lately.

In the Barrons peice I noticed that mention was made of the Philippines as the best performer of the year; I lived there several years and try to stay informed as to conditions there and I think it might be time so I loaded up on FPF (First Philippine Fund) as it is about the only way to play the place from here easily (though you can open an online account with Bank of the PI). But FPF is basically a dog that just tracks the PSE which is loaded with stocks with every sort of problem. But the idea of those US troops roaming around there is bound to boost the PSE (unless it doesn't!).

When we lived in Manila in 1996 there was a local TV program called PSE LIVE which was I guess modeled on CNBC and was very slick and well produced and even had a Filipina version of Maria B. touting the local stocks and had the usual morning parade of the local stock pickers and big talkers. In addittion to the crawl at the bottom of the screen there was a "close-up" camera at the exchange that would scroll down the "big board" while "Maria" was making some point or the other (the PSE is a "big board" system, with all the floor traders in a big room facing a screen 50' high and say 300'wide with every issue and vol ect displayed). Unfortunately the program was discontinued in I think 1999 with the collapse of the local market. You think the same might happen here some day (To CNBS)?

On Japan, I guess at some point maybe Mitsubishi Financial (MTF) might be a bounce play? (though I don't much like ADR's).

Sun, I'm with you on HAL (and also DOW) as asbestos overeaction plays though with HAL I've been making lots of "scalps" rather than just holding for the ride. As an engineer I worked in textiles in the 70's and 80's and I can tell you that anywhere there was ANYTHING HOT there was in those days loads of asbestos. I'll bet that GE's real asbestos exposure is thousands of times that of HAL.
