A practical man and tireless builder, Ruppin advocated "pragmatic" Zionism, believing that the most immediate need was to develop a systematic policy for land purchase and the development of solvent communities, to replace the "halukkah" system with productive labor. He was instrumental in the founding of the city of Tel Aviv, as well as in acquiring land on the Carmel, in the Jezreel Valley, and in Jerusalem. He promoted a variety of settlement initiatives, such as kibbutzim and other communal agricultural establishments, and was a founder of Brit Shalom, a group calling for a bi-national Jewish-Arab state in Palestine.

Although initially a supporter of Brit Shalom, which called for a bi-national state in Palestine, he rejected the idea following the Arab riots of 1929, insisting on the need for a single Jewish state

Well, I guess PM Sharon's visit to the US turns out to be a laughable flop: NSA C. Rice hinted at resuming discussions with Y. Arafat, Bush dismissed Sharon's request to terminate Arafat and I still have to find out whether he got his $800 million boodle or not --however that may be, Palestinian NGOs were donated a hefty $300 million.... That's the irony of the current Middle East diplomatics: despite all his media-hyped visits to the US, Sharon always winds up with anticlimactic results whereas marooned Arafat doesn't even need to go to Washington to feel supported --LOL! I bet you that Arafat, Powell and Bush are secretly convening on some top-secret e-chatroom...

Finally, did you catch that handshake between President Bush and PM Sharon seated in the White House parlor? Jeez... what a chilly handclasp. As the old saying goes, a handshake is worth a thousand pictures! <g>
