I wasn't aware that Allard had a lead, and the last I looked, Dole had serious party opposition in NC. The possibility for Whitman is simply Toricelli's emerging reputation as the most corrupt of a very corrupt party. But then NJ residents DO seem to embrace corruption as a sort of state pet. Sunnunu could win hands down if he just got the nomination. The national party can't interfere in state primaries. This is where soft money can serve the country extremely well: through something like a well-funded "Dump Smith" campaign.

I am, BTW, a supporter of unlimited soft money. It is presented as an evil to the ignorant because it limits the power of the left wing media to influence public opinion before an election. The media thus hates soft money, and does its best to convince the millions of the mind-numbed who insist on voting, even though they are not even slightly qualified. The good news is that polls show that few people find any importance in limitations on soft money, and also find John McCain to be an irritant on the scale of Ross Perot...
