Zeev, the situation had come to a head, IMO. The corrupt PA was on very weak ground. They squandered money paying off everyone to keep from having to deal with a power struggle in the PA.

The provocation from Sharon gave both people what they needed at the time. It gave Sharon the boost that made him the only viable option for many voters who wanted security, and it gave Arafat the enemy he needed to turn the attention of the population away from his corrupt government and lack of basic services. Both seem to have gotten more than they bargained for.

the standard of living of Israeli Arabs is the highest in the middle east

If the standard of living of South African blacks during Apartheid was higher than that of other African nations, did this justify Apartheid?
