Even the cheapest entry-level box on the market today will run rings around a rusty 233. If you're looking to get your kids something on the cheap go to your local Best Buy and look for "open box" specials. When someone buys a machine and then has second thoughts and returns it they can't resell it as new so instead they'll slash the price. If you're comfortable wiping the drive and reinstalling the OS you can get yourself a decent machine for very little money that way.

Even most of the packaged Linux distributions these days assume you're running at least a Pentium III.
