I noticed that the piece about the American Indians said that one rarely saw physically afflicted people. That connoted infanticide to me. I assume they had the same number of genetic misfortunes, such as Down's Syndrome, as have been had by all other peoples, but made choices about who would eat and who wouldn't during the long hard winters.

Lazarus, That is true, up to a point. Only the strong survived for the first few years, but once they get past that period, they grew even stronger because of the rigorous training for males, as warriors, and hunters, and the females for the many strenuous chores they were responsible for completing. In adulthood, they did not suffer from ulcers, heart attacks, tuberculosis, and many of the maladies caused by the stress, and strain, of the modern daily grind. Once the white man arrived, they carried many diseases the the Indians had never encountered, and had absolutely no immunity against, which in some cases, wiped out entire tribes.

Some of the herbal medications used by the Indians, are now being accepted by the modern medical world as being effective.
