(Photo: AP) At a meeting convened by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon at his Negev home Sunday night, in which Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Defense Minister Benjamin Ben Eliezer participated, it was decided that the government would carry out a series of harsh measures in retaliation for the shooting attack earlier in the day in Be'er Sheva in which two female soldiers were killed, and the firing of at least two Kassam rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel. It was not immediately clear the exact nature of the measures the three had decided on. The initial retaliation came in the form of an Israeli aerial attack on Palestinian targets in the Gaza Strip. IAF helicopters and warplanes struck the Ansar-2 police complex in Gaza City and what local residents said was a metal shop in the nearby Jebalya refugee camp. Officials evacuated the security building before the first attack, but more than a dozen people were taken to the hospital, most suffering from shock and from cuts caused by broken glass, hospital officials said. The injured included two workers at the nearby offices of the United Nations, where all the windows were blown out. In reaction, the U.N. envoy to the region, Terje Roed-Larsen, condemned the Israeli strike in a statement, expressing "outrage" over such a heavy bombardment so close to civilian areas and U.N. offices. "Israel's security needs will not be met by hitting civilian targets or by destroying the Palestinian's' ability to police and maintain order," read the statement. In a second strike, seven IAF helicopters circled over Jebalya, north of Gaza City, firing eleven missiles at what neighbors said was a metal workshop. Several homes were heavily damaged and one person was slightly wounded in the raid. The IDF said it hit the Ansar-2 security compound in Palestinian-ruled Gaza city in response to the "murderous attack" in the southern city of Be'er Sheva where two female soldiers died and said that the second strike targeted a mortar shell and rocket factory in Jebalya. Arafat adviser Nabil Abu Rudainah called on the United States to intervene immediately to help end the violence. "We condemn this new Israeli aggression and we warn the Israeli government that their rocketing attacks will lead the region to a greater explosion," he told Palestinian television. Two Palestinian gunmen opened fire close to the IDF Southern Command headquarters in Be'er Sheva in the early afternoon, killing two female soldiers and wounding five other people. A little over an hour earlier, three Kassam-2 rockets were fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip, landing in fields belonging to Kibbutz Sa'ad. Shortly after the Be'er Sheva attack, IDF troops split the Gaza Strip at two points - at Netzarim junction and in the area of the Gush Katif bloc of settlements. During his recent visit to the United States, Sharon told his American colleagues that if Kassam rockets were fired by Palestinians at Israeli communities, Israel would respond severely in a way "unlike anything else."
