Santa Ana winds occur when there is high pressure in the desert surrounding Los Angeles and low pressure in the LA basin. The air mass pushes through the mountain passes and canyons that encircle the basin. Friction and compression heat the air and speed it up.

Sometimes we get a Santa Ana without much wind, when the air is just very, very dry and crystal clear. Today was like that, you could see 50 miles or more.
