There is no reason why the thermal diode couldn't be monitored and the voltage and/or frequency adjusted when the processor starts to overheat.

For what it is worth, a variant of this procedure could be used to overclock the processor also. The user sets their maximum temperature they are comfortable with, and the values are diddled with automajically until that limit is reached...

Now that would be an interesting extra for a motherboard.
