5:49PM Monday After Hours Changes vs the 4 pm close: TRICON Global (YUM +2.69) beat for Q4 EPS by $0.04 with revenue in line; now targeting Q1 operating EPS of $0.74-$0.78 (consensus of $0.68) and expects FY02 operating EPS of $3.56-$3.63 (consensus of $3.55). Competitors include: DEO and MCD... Nortel Networks' (NT close 6.84, halted) announced the resignation of Terry Hungle, its recently appointed chief financial officer; Frank Dunn, Nortel's president and chief executive officer, has been appointed acting chief financial officer. After being hurt during the day in the wake of a negative Barron's article Actrade Financial (ACRT +1.37) updated guidance for FY02. Now expects EPS in a range of $3.00-$3.10 vs consensus estimate of $3.04. Cymer (CYMI -2.05) slides amid speculation that the company plans to offer $200 mln in convertible subordinated notes. In other earnings news: WellPoint Health (WLP close 27.29) beat the Q4 consensus by $0.06 and also topped the revenue estimate ($3.42 bln vs consensus of $3.29 bln); Aeroflex (ARXX close 15.90) topped estimate for Q2 but guided lower on top and bottom line for Q3.

Close Dow +140.54 at 9884.78, S&P +15.71 at 1111.93, Nasdaq +27.78 at 1846.66: The stock market was able to build on last week's late recovery rally with stocks such as QUALCOMM (QCOM +10.1%), Cisco Systems (CSCO +5.5%) and Ciena (CIEN +10.7%) providing an early boost. QCOM responded to recent accounting concerns after the close on Friday and this morning CSFB came out in defense; firm believes that management adequately disclosed practice of accepting equity in start-ups as payment for licenses and receivables. Stock was also upgraded by Gerard Klauer. This was the major factor behind the 4% gain in the wireless sector (YLS). News that AT&T was going to be using equipment from both CIEN and CSCO provided a boost for the networking (NWX +3.6%). A pre-market upgrade (NSM, MCRL) helped underpin the semi sector (SOX +3.8%).

2:30PM : Further upticks for the market averages with the Nasdaq Composite out performing during this latest push. Leading the way higher is the semiconductor sector (SOX +2.7%). The best performers in this group today are: MU (+5.4%), NSM (+4.3%), LSI Logic (LSI +4.7%) and TXN (+4.3%). A notable exception to the favorable action today is Advanced Micro (AMD -2.9). On a sector basis, the exception to the bullish bias is gold (XAU -4.9%)-- (NEM -5.4%) downgraded by Prudential. Volume continues at a slow pace and despite the steady rise this afternoon, market internals are still only moderately bullish. SOX +2.6%, XOI +0.7%, NYSE Adv/Dec 1972/1074, Nasdaq Adv/Dec 1872/1578

5:48PM ViaSat beats consensus (VSAT) 11.70 +0.56: Reports Q3 (Dec) earnings of $0.22 per share, $0.09 better than the Multex consensus of $0.13; revenues rose 16.2% year/year to $50.1 mln vs the $47.4 mln consensus.

3:24PM Nasdaq Composite Intraday Technicals : -- Technical -- Index is trading at its best levels of the session on solidly bullish internals and light volume. Currently trading just over near-term resistance at 1837/1840, look for subsequent overhead in the area of 1853/1855. To the downside, look for intraday support at 1837 followed by additional support at 1830.

2:02PM QLogic Intraday Technicals (QLGC) 47.05 +1.02: -- Technical -- Looks strong on an intraday basis, currently trading towards its best levels of the session. Look for initial resistance in the area of 47.40/47.50 with little resistance thereafter until the area of 48.70. To the downside, look for intraday support at 46.85.

1:12PM CIENA will see AT&T move to a 10%-plus customer (CIEN) 10.14 +0.68: -- Update -- CSFB sees AT&T deal, which had been anticipated, translating to $8-$10 mln in monthly revenues for CIEN. Based on CoreDirector sales, estimates AT&T as one of co's top three customers for the yr.

12:52AM Texas Instruments Intraday Technicals (TXN) 31.30 +1.01: -- Technical -- Stock has edged over notable resistance at 31.20. To the upside, look for subsequent overhead at 31.85 followed by additional overhead at 32.20. The favorable intraday tone would deteriorate on a break below 31.00.

10:03AM Cisco platform used in AT&T optical network (CSCO) 17.05 +0.29: Announces that AT&T has deployed the Cisco ONS 15454 SONET Multiservice Platform and Cisco Transport Manager in its nationwide intelligent optical network.

9:28AM Altera: positive comments by SG Cowen (ALTR) 23.45: After a recent meeting with co mgmt, SG Cowen is more confident in its Street-high FY03 est of $0.70, and believes that the Street consensus (currently $0.47) will gradually rise to that level. Mgmt also confirmed belief that it is taking share at design level and that these designs will translate into mkt share gains in 2003, which should narrow the valuation gap between it and arch-rival XLNX.

8:54AM Handspring upped by SoundView (HAND) 4.41: Hearing from sources that SoundView is upgrading HAND to BUY from Hold in anticipation of a successful transition to the Treo wireless communicator platform. Near-term catalysts include Treo's US launch and carrier announcements. Gross margins should benefit as Treo wholesale prices are likely to be more than double current blended ASP; firm estimates that by Dec gross margins should soar to 30% from 17% from the year ago qtr.

8:45AM Qualcomm defended by CSFB; upped by Gerard Klauer (QCOM) 37.24: CSFB believes that reaction Friday to accounting concerns was overblown. Believes that mgmt has adequately disclosed practice of accepting equity in start-ups as payment for licenses and receivables. Notes that the amount is minimal (less than 1% of total FY01 revs). Gerard Klauer also positive on QCOM this morning, viewing price decline as a buying opportunity. Upgrades QCOM to BUY from Outperform

8:30AM Analog Devices: Jan qtr may miss expectations (ADI) 38.87: Bear Stearns says that channel checks indicate that ADI's Jan qtr will likely come in below expectations. Firm believes that the qtr had weak bookings in Nov and Dec; ADI's core communications and industrial mkts were weak throughout most of 2001 and have continued to be weak in early 2002, as opposed to stronger mkts such as desktop computing, consumer, and wireless handsets where ADI has less exposure. Firm maintains Attractive rating and $46 price target, but lowers ests for Jan qtr, FY02, and FY03; believes current valuation is rich at 70x earnings.

8:30AM CIENA switches used in new AT&T network (CIEN) 9.46: AT&T announces that it has deployed a new nationwide intelligent optical network. According to AT&T, the CIENA CoreDirector will provide the core optical switching functions. TheCoreDirector switches are deployed in more than 40 cities nationwide, with plans calling for that total to increase significantly in the future.

8:11AM TranSwitch to make convertible debt purchases (TXCC) 8.93: Announces that it has commenced a "Modified Dutch Auction" tender offer for a portion of its convertible debt securities. Co will offer to purchase for cash, at prices determined by a auction procedure within the purchase price range of $650-$700 per $1,000 principal amount, TXCC's 4 1/2% Convertible Notes due 2005 up to a maximum aggregate principal amount of $200 mln, or approx. 64% of the outstanding principal amount of the Notes. Purchases will be made with available cash.

7:44AM National Semi & Micrel upped by CSFB : CSFB upgrades NSM and MCRL to BUY from Hold; firm believes that: 1) the analog/mixed-signal semi sector has reached a unit and rev bottom, 2) cycle is at the point where the mid-tier sector offers a compelling combo of rev growth and incremental margin expansion potential, 3) mkt is adequately discounting Q1 seasonal risks, and 4) stocks have reached attractive entry points based on past valuation metrics and expectations. NSM and MCRL price targets are $30 and $26, respectively
