Sun to use X86-based MPUs as it supports Linux

Sun Microsystems Inc. has ended more than a year of speculation by announcing it would for the first time adopt X86 microprocessors in its server products.

...

Still uncertain is whether Sun will endorse the IA-64 architecture from longtime rival Intel Corp., or side with Advanced Micro Devices Inc., which is about six months away from releasing its 64-bit Hammer device. The Hammer, in particular, is said to be well suited for database server applications of the kind that Sun's products address, analysts said.

...

Sun's anti-X86 stance may have softened with its September 2000 acquisition of Cobalt Networks, which used AMD and MIPS-based processors in its server appliances.

maui dude:

"I have a feeling you might lose this one too. I just dont think AMD will have the steam to shoot up any time soon. It seems to be a better time to be on the sell side of the option as opposed to buy."

Technically, AMD is oversold and looks like any break thru $15.25 could get it to $16 real fast...
