Thanks for saying that Janice, these things don't happen by magic, nor do they get done by a lot of talk without action.

I know how much hard work and how many long hours you put in to get these subpoenas stopped.

I also know who put up the money to pay the sizeable legal bills, and some of them did a lot of hard work to help with the fight.

I'm saddened by the fact that some people, in fact over 33 of them who were the beneficiary of others' time and money, haven't had the good grace to even say, "Thank you". To the people who did the work, we did a good job...thank you all for your time and money. To those who offered what they could, thank you for your thoughtfulness.

To the rest, have a nice day.

Janice, there certainly are many people to thank. Obviously there's the core group of you, Bill, Salem, Scion, and Sublime, who were all actively involved with talking to Esther Horwich, the MA attorney. If not for the extensive Janice Shell archives and around the clock work ethic, proving Dobry in no uncertain terms perjured himself by denying the use of certain aliases, he and his "benefactor" might have chosen to prolong the witch-hunt.

Silicon Investor should also be thanked for making Dobry have to justify each name on his list. I'd like to think they'd have done that, as AOL does, regardless of the TMRT ruling, but who knows. Therefore, we should also thank the TMRT defendants and the ACLU for making life much easier for John Does that have come after them.

No thanks at all go to Lycos/Raging Bull. They claim it's too much trouble for their scant legal staff to have to deal with subpoenas. This from a multi-million dollar publicly traded company that exists solely because of the Internet. Companies that don't stick up for their members are doomed to fail. It's only a matter of time before Raging Bull members make a mass exodus to iHUB.

- Jeff

My deepest and heartfelt thanks go to:

- The ACLU-Washington organization for their help in both establishing (with the Electronic Frontier Foundation) appropriate standards (the four factor test) via their participation in the 2themart case and for their help with respect to the subpoena of 41 SI aliases.

- Infospace/Silicon Investor for insisting that the subpoena served upon it be based on a court order following consideration of the four part test. While I believe that this was not only appropriate from a legal perspective, but also from a business perspective, I still recognize that a less enlightened organization might have taken different actions in the matter.

- All those SI and RB posters who contributed their time and/or money in the effort that led to the withdrawals of these inappropriate subpoenas.

I have been traveling for a bit as the "inside team" knows.

Of course, some of us have given our thanks, and other contributions, more privately. Nevertheless, I have no qualms about doing so publicly -- and do so here now.

Thanks to SalemsHex, Janice Shell, our attorney, and several others who contributed to the effort to protect the privacy of a subset of individuals, and by extension all of us. The more I mention, the more I risk defeating the purpose, neh?

I remain willing and able to assist in this process. I am rather chagrined that SiliconInvestor has yet to notify me in any fashion, such as a private message, in this entire affair. A message from Janice was the only warning I had.

Again, thanks to all who helped!

Hi Janice and everyone. I did send thanks on a post at RB and on ICQ, but I should have said something here. I really haven't spent much time with these things lately. I had been preoccupied with a personal tragedy.

I do wish to thank all involved for their relentless efforts in the quashing of the illegitimate subpoena in both instances. I don't even know if I was named in the Raging Bull issue, but maybe "WetWerk" was ;^)

I would think life was difficult without one adding to their trials (no pun), especially in such ways as does this Dobry fella.

So many question the good work that is done on these boards and what is the motivation of those that "do good". So frequently they assign an evil motivation to the act. That is an accusation that is unavoidable. However, I have the answer and it is an old one...

I salute those of you that "do good" as I believe very much, the following to be true:

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Edmund Burke (1729-1797)

Thanks again

TG

Because I do not read RB, I am somewhat in the dark as to what has taken place as far as the quash. I know that you and others did spend a lot of time and money on this effort and you should be thanked. It's too bad that it was even necessary.I am still having a problem figuring out why SI thought it was perfectly okay to divulge so much personal information about their subscribers. To me it just means their privacy policy is a joke. Why should anyone have to get pay legal fees to protect themselves from harassment, stalking and fraud by someone like Pugs? SI has his history on SI, I would think they would have taken a little time to investigate that. From what I have read here, it appears to me that Pugs simply filed a subpoena using his attorney's name. Is that the case ?

I suppose was being naive in thinking that SI would never consider divulging information unless there was a valid reason. It appears to me that they were playing pretty fast and loose with our information and were willing to divulge for no reason whatsoever. Also, I would think they would have at least notified us. My name appeared on the list, but to this day they haven't notified me.

Thank you to everyone who carried the ball this time.

Janice...

Just got back from my vacation. I wanted to publicly thank you, scionist, Mr. Sutton, and ALL of the NWO for your Herculean efforts in the Dobry matter(I'm sure I missed many others. I tend to post infrequently and am unaware of the many players involved here. If I missed your name, please accept my humble apologies and my heartfelt thanks as well!)

Up the Rebel!

I've spend the better part of the day reading all the posts here as well as about 1000 or so on RB because I figure I could play hooky at least once. <g>

I've expressed my thanks in private to some of ya'll who worked to get the subpoenae withdrawn but failed to make public my deepest and most sincere thanks.

Thank you just doesn't seem to be the right words to express how I feel but it's about the extent of my vocabulary as quite a few of ya'll very well know.

What started out as an interesting and sometimes strange saga four years ago has turned into the most bizarre piece of work known to man. There isn't a fiction writer alive who could've come up with something like this.....not even TV people could've.

Janice, what you've endured over these past four years is just amazing. Most people would have cracked from this crap long time before. You're a powerful strong woman. I'm mighty proud to know you.

Salem/John, scion, Jeff, ya'll guys have gone above and beyond as well. Ya'll take some pretty harsh stuff too and not let it stop you.

Thanks to all ya'll..
