Herman Miller, Inc. Announces Alliance With Corning Cable Systems
Agreement Will Bring More Efficient, Cost Effective Fiber Optic Performance to Work Areas
ZEELAND, Mich., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Herman Miller, Inc. (Nasdaq: MLHR - news), a leading global provider of innovative office furniture and workplace consulting services, today announced an agreement with Corning Cable Systems, a leading manufacturer of fiber optic and copper communications network infrastructure solutions, to bring high- speed fiber optic cable closer to work areas in order to improve network performance and flexibility.

Herman Miller will combine its zone distribution office furniture products with Corning Cable Systems' fiber optic technology to provide end-users with scalable infrastructure solutions that can easily be reconfigured to meet specific zone cabling needs while still enhancing the performance of the overall computer network.

``The benefits of zone cabling are numerous and significant,'' said Alex Berman, senior technology product manager, Herman Miller, Inc. ``It's easier to upgrade and maintain, it's much more cost effective to reconfigure, and network problems are easier to troubleshoot because you can quickly identify geographically where a problem exists.''

Zone distribution reduces material and installation costs by at least 15 percent by replacing multiple home run copper cables with one fiber optic cable running from the main closet to a distribution hub in the furniture. From there, either copper or fiber cables deliver data drops to each workstation.

With zone distribution, rearranging workstations -- an activity Herman Miller furniture makes easy with its cable lay-in capability -- is faster and more cost effective, since short lengths of copper cable get reused instead of replaced. Additionally, Herman Miller zone distribution products are designed to integrate seamlessly with Herman Miller furniture, further enhancing both its short term and long term value.

``We are excited about the new architecture solutions Corning Cable Systems and Herman Miller will bring to end-users to make bandwidth scalability easier,'' said Bob Pollock, director of Private Networks Marketing, Corning Cable Systems. ``We share the same philosophy on how to approach office environments to offer viable solutions to customers.''

Herman Miller (Nasdaq: MLHR - news) creates great places to work by researching, designing, manufacturing and distributing innovative interior furnishings that support organizations and individuals worldwide. The company's award-winning products, complemented by primary furniture-management services, generated over $2 billon in revenue during calendar 2000. Herman Miller is widely recognized both for its innovative products and business practices, including the use of industry-leading, customer-focused technology.
