I just rechecked max pain and it has moved to a range of 42.5 to 45. The tilt is toward 45 but it is slight in terms of dollars taken out. When you look at the amount of dollars in options that are taken out - especially in the large cap stocks - it runs in the 100's of millions. AOL is over a billion. What a sweet deal for someone when the options go out at max pain! I am starting to look at max pain data for the future. As I look at January expirations it becomes clear why no January is likely to be a good one for the market - assuming of course that it is possible to drive stock prices toward max pain. The temptation to make it happen must be very great.
