You're asking all the right questions...

How to make money from Wi-Fi / Wi-Fi5?

Intersil sells chipsets for the deployed radio access points, not to mention cards for the subscriber devices. Last I heard, they weren't giving them away ;^>.

In terms of the operators, the smartest approach is to tie the service to the sale of other goods/services: train-plane tickets, coffee, lounge passes,...

$750,000 3g base station or 100 sub-$1,000 .11x access points. I think the math is straight-forward.

Cheers. Rob

Pierre: My question was, and is, how can one make money wiring a community for what amounts to free service?

FREE! That has been my point all along! It not that it is really FREE, only that the perception to the consumer is darn near FREE! After all.. The Internet is FREE? Isn't it! Data is FREE! Voice is paid by the MOU!

Data is considered a "second class citizen". And it really is in most cases. Voice is a mission critical application, Everything has to arrive on time and in order! Or you end up sounding like Maurice! Data (in most cases) is a best attempt type of service. No particular order is really necessary.. (For the most part). Oh! You missed a couple of bytes? No problem. Well send it next time.

The problem for Wireless Operators is that they pay the same for spectrum for voice and data. There is no discount given by the FCC for data spectrum. Infrastructure manufactuers are the same. Radio Access Equipment is not "marked down" because it will be used for data.

So my question has always been.. How can a Wireless Telco sell Wireless Data at a discount to Voice, when the spectrum the data is occupying could be used for pay by the minute voice. 3G sure looks expensive. You are going to need a crowd to pay top dollar to use that equipement. But, you have some ski bum using unlicensed spectrum giving everyone free data access in town for a couple of thousand dollars to build the network. Selling that same group data at the same rate they are paying for voice is going to be a tough sell.

Like Maurcie pointed out one time. I remember paying by the minute for CompUserve! Time ticking by, My bill getting bigger! Where the heck is my data! Hurry UP! Damn It! So I can sign off before I need a second mortgage to pay off my bill. It was not a pretty sight. You wanted to go out and beat the dog after you got signed off.

The perception of Data is a second class citizen in comparison to voice is a major stumbleing block for 3G adoption.

IF the demand is poor from the consumer, then it will flow downhill.

Market for Mobile High Rate Data Services is poor. Demand for always on 60-80K replacement for Dial-Up for $30 per month all you can eat!

BIG!!
