The US was well prepared to fight a war against Saddam because of the locally much-maligned relationship with the Saudis, which included a bunch of US-built bases ready for occupancy. But it's pretty hard to break any of that away from oil.

As for our interests, that is of course always the question in the Middle East. Historically, the US has seldom paid much more than lip service to democracy when there were economic issues that cut the other way.
