David,

When we were in Australia last summer, found food extremely cheap relative to here. Saw tomatoes for 25 cents a pound US$ in Australia and here I pay $3.00. Same relative pricing with all fresh fruits and vegetables. We found the equivalent hotel rooms at least 50% cheaper in Melbourne and restaurant meals half the cost. Also, using the Tram system in Melbourne was less expensive than our system here. We used the train system to travel to rural areas and this was less expensive. Oh, golfing is dirt cheap in Australia compared to here - about a 75% discount. Maybe the Aussy's do not play very much golf. <g>

We were in Melbourne and did not visit Sydney. Could be that Sydney is more expensive. Did not look into price of homes, apartments and services.

One thing noted is the people in Australia are more friendly and honest than people are here. For example we left a very expensive digital camera on a table in a restaurant and about 30 minutes later realized we had left it. Drove back to the restaurant and it was still there. This would never happen here. Also the young people in Australia have respect for their elders. When we got on the tram the young people immediately got up and gave us their seats - this does not happen here.

In one of the rural towns we had a private chauffeur for 100 Aussey$ per day which included touring during the day and picking up us up and taking us home for the evening meal. This service was from 9am to 9pm. IMO, this is dirt cheap. Heck, we pay this amount in US$ (50) just to get to the Airport.

As you can see I was happy with our experience.

Joan
