Intel trials 802.11a in the UK

» Chris Lee , 11-02-2002

Intel is to run a live demonstration of what it claims is the first wireless local area network (Wlan) in the UK to use the 802.11a standard.
The company has obtained a one-week licence from the UK Radiocommunications Agency to stream live coverage of events at London Fashion Week, from 17-20 February, to delegates' handheld devices.

Intel's 802.11a Wlan supports data speeds of up to 54Mbps but is not recognised by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, which is backing the rival HiperLan2 standard.

Evelien Wiggers, of researcher IDC, says that provided 802.11a WLans comply with the HiperLan2 requirements of having transmission control protocol and dynamic frequency selection functionality, then it could be legal in Europe.

"The two can co-exist so long as 802.11a complies with European standards, as the US version of 802.11a is not so tough," she said.

Intel was unavailable for comment.

John,

[I]f you hold [the uPs] as unpackaged, untested die, then the cost burden is relatively low

That would be considered a Work in Progress, correct?

Irregardless, given the decline in inventories QoQ, I believe that AMD was not "stockpiling" uPs in Q4.
