There seemed to be some belief I did not know what I was talking about when I stated retail sales were improving just over a week ago. Maybe this will help satisfy the curious.

usatoday.com

"U.S. chain store sales rose 2.1% during the week ended Feb. 9, after a 0.7% drop the prior week, the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and UBS Warburg reported in their Weekly Chain Store Sales Snapshot."

This quote is from an article in The Wall Street Journal about recent consumer spending. I am totally baffled as to the cause of the below paragraph. Meaning does anyone know what may have caused this?

"Sales at gasoline stations surged 5.1%. If gasoline sales are excluded, retail sales would have risen only by 0.6%."
