I agree with everything you said, except that Intel introduced the .18u P3 @ 1 GHz about this time two years ago, didn't they? They were panicked because AMD had just introduced the 1 GHz Athon. Then the Athlon 4s & Tualatins came out last year.

Intel introduced 1 GHz desktop about 2 years ago, couple of weeks after AMD.

Last year, AMD was about to introduce 1 GHz notebook chip, and this time Intel jumped the gun and released 1 GHz Coppermine notebook chip, which was basically a desktop chip, just to spare Intel embarrassment of being second again. As you said Athlon 4 and Tualatin, which were legitimate notebook chips came about a month or 2 later.
