Bought roma (plum in American) tomatoes just now for $A0.99 per kg = $US0.23 per pound.

Two industries still have some tariff - cars and clothing. Tariff is 5% or less on everything else. Those two have about 20% now. There is a protectionist attitude on the car industry... the clothing one is going.. but not really on other things.

A lot of people do move overseas to work but the flow goes the other way too. I came here. Yes my mother is Australian, but I had never been here till 1996. Of course then the Aussie was at $US0.80 :) There is a revolving door basically - in and out. All the time I hear American/Canadian accents when various people are interviewed on the radio across a wide range of higher level positions.

Aussie economy and stock market has the best performance in the world. EWA (converted to USD) is probably the best performing exchange traded fund on AMEX in the last few years. So it can't be all bad?

Interesting that in the alst couple of weeks moves on the ASX 200 exactly parallel the moves in the AUD hour to hour more or less. Foreign or repatriated money clearly buying in.
