Tokyo Electron to Return to Profit Next Fiscal Year (Update2)
By Yoshifumi Takemoto

quote.bloomberg.com

Tokyo, Feb. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Tokyo Electron Ltd. will probably return to profit next fiscal year, aided by sales of high- end products, new customers and cost cuts, the president of the No. 2 maker of chipmaking equipment said.

``The effect of cost cuts will begin to show by the summer and we are also seeing strong demand from some chipmakers'' retooling their factories with the most advanced technology, President Terry Higashi said in an interview. However, ``sales will not pick up until the end of 2002.''

Higashi's hope for a recovery in the twelve months beginning April 1 is mirrored by growing optimism among executives at Applied Materials Inc. The U.S.-based company yesterday predicted new orders may rise 10 percent to 15 percent in the three months ending in April compared with the period just ended.

The ``forecast may be further evidence we're starting to see bright spots in the equipment maker (industry),'' said Hideaki Mizuno, chief investment officer at ING Mutual Funds Management, which holds Tokyo Electron shares. ``It's premature to say we're on track for a full (recovery) but I'm cautious. I think we're seeing a ray of light.''
