Things may be coming to a head, SR. The Israeli papers are reporting that Arafat has fired Jibril Rajoub, after pulling a gun on him in a meeting last weekend.

Rajoub is one of the big cheeses of the Young Guard -- the head of Preventitive Security (if I remember the name right) on the West Bank. The Israelis have always regarded him as the most rational of Arafat's lieutenants, and the one who knows the most about Israel.

Rajoub has been saying openly for weeks that militarizing the intifada was a mistake, and he and Arafat came to blows after Rajoub urged or announced (accounts differ) dismantling the Al-Aqsa brigades and really going after Hamas.

The papers also say that Arafat is losing control of the Tanzim, who are commanded by Marwan Bargouti; they won't obey orders to cool it anymore.

Meantime, Hamas has begun shelling Israeli towns with Quasem-2 homemade rockets, which is causing the Israelis to escalate their retaliation and talk about seizing buffer zones.

Internecine conflict among the Palestinians is very close now.
