I don't disagree that gold has appeal to countries going through economic crisis...gold was popular when the US seemed to be in perpetual decline in the 1970s, and perhaps something similar is happening in Japan today. However, I think that in many ways the US dollar has become what gold used to be. The US dominates the world today in a way that has not been seen since...well maybe not since the British Empire of the 19th century, or perhaps not even then. I wonder if your old lady in Tokyo would prefer US T-bills (if she can buy them?), or maybe just a wad of dollars under the mattress.
