CHAM, Switzerland -- ESEC Group here today reported a 21% sequential drop in net revenues to 21.3 million Swiss francs ($36.0 million) compared to sales of 26.8 million Swiss francs in Q3 of 2001. For the entire 2001 year, the supplier of chip-assembly systems posted revenues of 188.9 million Swiss francs ($319.2 million) compared to 647.2 million Swiss francs in 2000.

Last year, the company said it anticipated an operating loss of 100 million Swiss francs ($169 million) for the fiscal 2001 year. Today, ESEC did not release information about its loss in either the fourth quarter or the entire 2001 year.

The company's bookings in the fourth quarter totaled 18 million Swiss francs (30.4 million), a 22% increase over the prior three-month period. For 2001, ESEC's bookings totaled 106.3 million Swiss francs vs. 578.3 million Swiss francs in 2000--a plunge of 81.6%. The company said its bookings now appear to have stabilized at low levels, indicating a bottom to the industry slump in backend packaging tools.
