<I don't think one has to invoke conspiracies to account for the weak gold price. Anyway, one hopes with the new "cartel" that's coming into being that they will slow the production down a bit. >

I've been saying for the last five years gold production was going to keep rising, and is just now is starting to go flat. Every essay one reads predicting gold will shooot to $500 ($1000 in Hathaway essay) says world production will go from 2600mt now to under 2000mt (the Hathway/Meridian chart looks like 1800mt) by 2010.

Meanwhile, I was thinking 2250mt or so would be much more reasonable. I recently found a GFMS prediction for 2392mt in 2010 (a little high ?) Gold production should double in places like Mali, Tanzania, and Argentina. One is going to hear more about Uzbekistan and Kazahastan gold. Gold miners and mines are not all going out of business, the stuff is still valuable even at a lowly price like $300 per ounce.

I wonder if those currently concerned about conspiracies, cartels, and manipulation of gold prices downward will be as concerned about "new cartels" of mining companies restricting production in an effort to manipulate prices upward. Isn't manipulation evil regardless of the intention, up or down ?
