If a cartel of gold producers attempt to limit production to raise gold prices, then consumers will get hurt. Now gold is a luxury good, unlike food, but on principles - Why shouldn't we be equally concerned when/if it gets manipulated up as when it gets manipulated down ? Someone gets hurt either way.
