Corruption from within....as usual.

Yes that's a big part in the collapse of many empires or civilizations. The Roman empire is a good example of this. The barbarians didn't become much stronger, they where probably less strong the previous threats that the Romans had survived (Hannibal/Carthage and Attilla/ the Huns come to mind) but Rome was weaker and could no longer stop them.
