His suffering was real as was His death.
Maybe he was in pain for a couple days, but if that was his example of sacrifice he could have just flogged himself as he crawled up some pathway the way I have seen some do as they go toward the Virgin of Guadalupe. No it was dying and the unknown after effects of dying that would have frightened a real human. That fear would be missing in a God/man unless he didn't have confidence in himself to rise again. Without the fear factor the only useful outcome would be to showcase the whole life after death phenomina, but that would be best done by presenting himself in public and not going off to a backwater to preach for a month.
