It could be that the R&D is being squandered into twinkies, cheese doodles and soda. There are also examples of R&D developing great stuff but not being commercialized by the company incurring the expense, though it is by others (such as Xerox in its Xerox Parc). However,most of us think it has developed into great IPR here and the EVA technique you suggested would begin to close the gap between the perceived value of IPR by many of us, and the fairly small balance sheet value (and shareholders equity value) of these investments.


Let's see how Q looks with EVA and balance that off the net income valuations and book value valuations that are being used here. It would certainly give a higher value for Q.
