Spend or die

There is a lot of $$'s in the "trailing edge" of the semi biz. Especially when there has been a bean counter driven consolidation -g-. You can usually charge more for decade old parts then the newest and greatest chips. Even discretes do good business.

There is such a turnover in technology and people now, if you ask someone about a 10yr old technology, there maybe no one left with expertise in it.

The military in particular don't like changing parts or designs. Some of the discretes I helped manufacture were sold for over $1000 each.

For all the "systems on a chip" designs, it's usually cheaper to leave the real old chit out and buy it separately. Bummer if there's only one supplier left.

I think there is even 2 inch wafers still being used in Japan. Equipment costs should be well depreciated by now (30+ yrs old)

CDE up 10% for some reason
