Here is a prediction. After Musharraf returns to Pakistan, he will sack Abdul Sattar as foreign minister. Reason: He didn't get enough from the US in return for Pakistan's support.

Not all assistance to Pakistan is automatically bad for India. For example, US is promising assistance in the General's Jihad to reform the education system in Pakistan. This is a good thing for India.

The only thing that India could have interpreted as "good" is if Pakistan had been labeled a "terrorist state" and Musharraf had been rebuked and ignored. Last time I checked, nothing of that sort had happened...

If only your PM was awake during his visit... well, one can always dream! At least he can! <g>

It turns out that the promised (it is all still just promises) aid to Pakistan, which works out to be in the $250-$300 million range - out of which $200 million, being "debt relief" will not actually ever leave Washington, D.C. - is more of a carrot to ensure future good behaviour from Musharraf rather than payment for services rendered.

Senator Joe Biden, chairman of the Senate International Relations Committee, has spelled out four conditions Pakistan needs to satisfy for the aid package to be approved. These are:

1) "Unadulterated democracy".
2) Fair and transparent elections.
3) Continued support in the fight against terrorism
and religous extremism.
4) Reduction of tensions with India.
