The man was forced to resign
The man agreed with the mayor under the advice of the chief of staff to resign. It was a bad idea. The only one who lost their job permanantly was the chief of staff who was let go for giving bad advice.

The incident probably could have been avoided with an explanation right away, but the offended party immediately left thinking herself the target of an insult. She recanted once she learned the real nature of the conversation but not until a complaint had been lodged. There was an immediate protest over this "slur" and once it was explained some of the most vehement protestors were embarased enough to try a few general complaints before admitting there was no wrong done.

The bru-ha-ha died down fairly quickly everywhere but the AM talk shows who wanted to make a point about political correctness. They are the ones who used the term "fired" and convieniently forgot to mention that an open explanation led to a reasonable resolution to the situation. To this day only half the story is told, no wonder it appears suspect.
