I don't know what decade you think you're in, but in the 21st century, there are a lot of businesses who run the kinds of applications that I mentioned, too. But I guess it depends on what your definition of "business" is. Re: ". In database applications, it will do far more than "ok". With the kinds of memory bandwidths, cache capacities, and memory / integer units inside the McKinley core, it ought to blow the rest of its competitors out of the water, or at least the ones in the same class (dual core Power4 processors and Matrix linked EV7 cores notwithstanding - of course, these processors are also going to be in a whole other price class, too). As for what you define to be "business logic" computing, I think the Itanium could possibly do very well. Remember that the only apps that you have to compare are SPEC benchmarks running on Merced, and those binaries have already been finely tuned for the other architectures that they run on. Given future compiler enhancements, even Merced would look better in SpecInt. For real-world code, though, I'm betting that Merced has gotten the short end of the stick, and Intel doesn't want to push it as hard, since it wants customers to wait for McKinley. When McKinley ships, so will the whole deluge of benchmarks, and having read and understood the specs, I think McKinley will perform exceedingly well (even in such "business logic" applications). wbmw
