Fortuna First Vice President Michael Hillmeyer Vice President PC Hardware Merrill Lynch/CRN PC Conference Call Highlights Reason for Report: Industry Update. Highlights: • We hosted our monthly Merrill Lynch/CRN Conference Call this morning. The call focused on the results of 2 surveys: (1) CRN’s monthly survey of 200 Value Added Resellers (VARs) who specialize in sales to small & midsize firms and (2) CRN’s quarterly survey of small company spending priorities (based on interviews with 200 MIS execs in January). • Solution providers’ expectations concerning near term sales growth strengthened considerably in January. Compared to December, expectations were higher in all eight of the HW/SW categories regularly surveyed, with particularly strong gains in desktops, networking hardware and software, and PC servers. In four categories—desktops, networking hardware, notebooks, and Unix servers, sales expectations are actually above year-earlier levels, the first time this has been seen in many months. The level of sales expectations is strongest in networking hardware, desktops, and peripherals, and remains weakest in Unix servers. Overall expectations, looking at all seven categories as a group, are now at their highest level since mid 2001, before September 11 th . The January figures, along with those from previous months, confirm CRN’s initial analysis from last month that expectations are bottoming and may finally be starting their long-awaited recovery, although expectations are still well below levels seen in the peak period of 2000 and early 2001.
