I felt it could not get by that resistance.

Just from trading around that number since yesterday.

By overnight cushion I meant I had a few contracts from 88, so if my short moved up a bit that profit would cushion it from being a loss if I had to get out.

A profit cushion, that I was willing to let go if I had to : )

One more thing that helped me to know the Nasdaq and techs would have trouble this am was the IBM news. So fundamental analysis is equally important as TA levels! IBM has always been a leader, if it's got accounting questions I knew all techs would be under pressure.
