C.D.:

"RR is also the father of the deficit. Voodoo economics. Remember?"

*********************************************************

Ronald Reagan's trickle-down economics brought in record revenues to the government. However, the Congress held by the Democrats spent it faster than it could come in. That is why the "Voodoo economics" crowd was wrong. In fact Bush senior coined the "Voodoo economics" phrase when opposing Reagan during the Republican primary. Bush senior down played he "Voodoo economics" statement when he realized it was false.

I would admit that Reagan submitted and received from Congress major increases in defense spending. This allowed the U.S. to win the Cold War and hand Clinton the peace dividend. Of all the responsibilities of the Federal Government its number one responsibility is to protect and defend our country. History has shown that a week defense invites trouble.

With the above said, it is always more productive to allocate capital and resources to non-defense spending. Building a tank does not add value to the economy. That is why reduced defense spending under Clinton was a great boom for the economy. Unfortunately, the boom grew to a financial bubble. Greed also has it own way of miss-allocating capital and resources.

Remember that the constitution gives Congress the authority to spend. A President can only recommend a budget.

p.s. The real father of the deficit is L.B.J. He tried to do both guns and butter. It did not work. Remember his great society?

Looks to me like Clinton 'owns' about 25% of the National Debt. At least Regan had something to show for it.

09/30/1993 $4,411,488,883,139.38
12/31/2001 $5,943,438,563,436.13

Jesh ... and Clinton told me there were surplusses ... but I can't find them anywhere.

The US gubmint is the poster child for accounting fraud.

Did anyone else see the irony of our pious elected 'leaders' calling Enron execs frauds, carnival barkers and ponzi scheme operators? I couldn't stop laughing.

To paraphrase Casablance, "I'm shocked, shocked to learn there is accounting fraud going on here".
