Broadcom's ServerWorks Inc. unit is expected to unveil at the Intel Developers Forum on February 25 a new dual-processor chipset for Intel Corp.'s Prestonia server processor.

Bert McComas, principal of InQuest Research, Gilbert, Ariz., told EBN that a just-completed survey of OEMs and motherboard makers showed the new ServerWorks chipset had 83 of 90 design wins. Intel will re-enter the 32-bit server chipset market at IDF with its own Plumas core logic to compete against the ServerWorks juggernaut.

The new ServerWorks chipset reportedly has a 333MHz memory bus speed, one of the highest yet achieved, and interfaces with Intel's new 533MHz processor front side bus.

It also has HyperTransport features, adopting the new high-speed interface standard between devices and within a chip that is espoused by Intel rival Advanced Micro Devices. The ServerWorks chipset also has the usual new features -- PCI-X 2.0, Infiniband, and serial ATA.
