AB - I think I'm coming around to any of them. I remember Winstar. They were 'just about to go EBITDA neutral'! You need to be cash flow positive these days or else sooner or later you will get whacked.

1. Recently we have seen a number of posters saying they are going to get rid of their land lines and only use their mobiles. No charges for LD for example.

2. Baby Bells and other local carriers are presumably making some money on local business land lines. My guess is that is a nice lunch that others will soon be after. Anyway can you see growth in this area?

3. ADSL? Well 3G is competition for that althoug we have to see the price structure. But it at least represents competition along with a bunch of others see below.

4. Wireless. Well seven majors are going to cut prices till the pips squeek. So no growth there.

5. Mobile data. The only thing that stands a chance is 1X with the upgrade to +400Kbps so long as EDGE fails to appear and W-cdma is delayed.

Where does anyone see any solid growth in our lifetime in telecom? In which area? Maybe if the economy ever recovers then some of the slack might get absorbed allowed for some price stability but without that I just can't see where prices can hold.

Now Michael Powell is on record as saying that he sees the electric grid as a broadband solution. He may be right in which case we have:-

twisted copper, fibre optic., the electric grid, 3G wireless, LMDS, MMDS, 802.11(b), 802.11(a) and now Ultra Wide Band all competing for data (which now includes voice) to homes and businesses.

Great for consumers but there are too many eaters at his table of providers. They are either all going to be very thin eaters or some of them are going to starve and the rest are still going to be thin.

As for the Q it seems to me that it is the best bet in terms of a tech company but even it's lunch is evaporating as we wait for the 1X launch.

And if Heaven forbid anything happens to delay VZ or PCS then we are toast.

I wish I was wrong and I'd be more than happy for someone to point to telecom or some part of it as a growth business. Ultimately the only long term business is the real estate business. No technology has ever eaten its lunch.

Best,

L
