Mortality and Life Expectancy

These two measures provide dramatic evidence of the overall improvement in the health of U.S. citizens in the 20th century. The age-adjusted death rate (expressed as the number of deaths per 100,000 population) declined by about 74 percent from 1900 to 1998. The life expectancy for a person born at the end of the century was 76.5 years, compared to 49.2 years at the beginning of the century.
