We live in a Representative Republic, not a Democracy. We are supposed to elect leaders that agree with our views and will try and do what is right and best for the country. Once they are elected, it is up to them to decide what is right. Please do not tell me what I do and do not get. The concept of democracy was borne from the Greek city-states where all those who were citizens participated and voted on issues that effected that state. As populations grew, it was determined that democracy in its pure form would lose its effectiveness and so it was decided that having elected representatives would be more effective and efficient. It was expected that these representatives would in fact be elected because they represented the majority view of their constituencies. Should that turn out not to be true, then in the case of the US model, they could be impeached where laws have been violated, or a special election called, or voted out of office at the next election. Now later in your post, you mention joe six pack......if joe six pack is who represents the majority view of a district than the elected representative has the responsibility to represent that view. It is too easy for us to demean joe six pack and his views and to ignore them but that's not what democracy is......in a democracy, everyone has a right to his/her view and only an elitist would assume that joe six pack's view does not have value. Now Mr. Ray believes firmly that an elected representative knows best presumably because he/she is more educated, informed etc and should vote how he/she pleases even if it is contrary to what his/her constituency wants. However, should a representative do that repeatedly, its very likely they will be voted out of office. That's why the elitist viewpoint doesn't work well in a democracy, and why elitists don't like the concept of democracy. They think they know better. And let me add, the elitist view does not often work well for a society even where it is implemented and that's because more times than not, they do not know what's best for that society. Hitler is an extreme but classic example of that thesis. And I would not have it any other way......."we, the people" is more than just some words strung together. When you take all the joe six packs and all the college boys and girls and put them all together and let them fight it out, its my opinion that that's when the best ideas are created. And why is that? The well educated and/or rich and/or well informed often lose sight of the basics in their self conscious awareness.........a luxury that joe six pack can't afford. ted
