Obviously it takes all kinds. I have an AP kid and it hasn't occurred to us that he needs a personal cell phone, nor does he have the time or inclination to play games on our computer. On the few occasions that he needs a cell phone for one of his activities he borrows mine or my wife's.

My experience is more like that of the teacher to whom you responded. Few if any of my sons peers have a cell phone or any great need for one. Maybe, in our case, its just a midwest thing.
