Notice that the Prince is going for a twofer - Nadine has made it perfectly clear that the powers that be in Israel are not really interested in giving up the settlements in the West Bank and Gaza, but Friedman is on the record for supporting it.

Yes, Friedman was always for Oslo, and too slow to see that Arafat couldn't go along with it -- that is, the minute Arafat stopped just getting stuff from it and had to do something on his side, like build a state, or talk about what a deal might mean to the Palestinians.

While I don't think that Sharon or the Likud is interested in giving up the settlements, I still believe that an Israeli majority would be extremely interested, if they thought they had a peace partner.

A peace partner means someone who is interested in setting up a Palestinian state next to Israel, not a state as a first step to destroying Israel. Giving up settlements to someone who only plans to continue a war against you doesn't make much sense, does it?

The Israeli majority is quite sure that Arafat is no kind of a peace partner. At this point, having fomented violent chaos, Arafat could probably no longer be a peace partner if he wanted to be.

If some outside power, such as the Arab League, were to start working for peace instead of against it as they always have, the Israeli majority would demand a serious government response.

- Problem w/ Friedman, Clinton, Peres . . . etc... is that they believe Jews are "occupiers;" & the Jews are building "settlements"

- That's a bunch of spin - in actuality - the so called "occupied territories" contain all the Jewish towns of Hebron, Jerusalem, etc...

- I say to partition Palestine along the lines of the Balfour declaration; & everyone go to their respective sides
