The whole beauty of Intel's approach is that they change process generations every two years, which gives them enough time to depreciate costs, and build up the coffers for the next process generation, after which the process gets shifted over to more commodity level chips. Once there, it's nearly all profit, and Intel can continue to move forward with new technology.
