Those who argue that Reagan era policies had no significant effect upon the demise of the old USSR should get a free membership to the Flat Earth Society. I think maintaining that argument requires the same sort of mind set as Flat Earthers....

Well put Neo, one need only look to Cuba and North Korea as examples of how long communism can "hang on" when given enough attention.

My opinion is the Soviets collapsed because of two main reasons. 1) Reagan and his defense policies, and 2) the communication revolution.

The Soviet's belief they could keep outlying regions ignorant of the west began to disintegrate with the mass migration of communication systems. The internet was only a distant dream at the time, but anyone with a vision of the future could see that propaganda and outright misinformation was going to be challenged like never before.

The former Soviet Union stood on a foundation of lies told over and over to its people. Lies about America, lies about the west, lies about their standard of living, and lies about their nations technological superiority. As the curtain of lies began to open, the leadership was lost in how to respond.

China is going to go through the same sort of struggle in the coming years as more and more of her citizens know what the outside world is really like.

Bush's speech yesterday to Chinese students was a wonderful illustration of this struggle.

Best Mike
