Mitsubishi will produce terminals which are compatible with Alcatel's UMTS networks. This will allow the French group to provide complete UMTS solutions to operators, by the end of this year or early in 2003. The agreement does not affect Alcatel's strategy: the French group is still seeking a partner in mobile telephony, according to a spokesperson yesterday. More specifically, Alcatel is still looking for a partner for its 3G (third generation) mobile 'phones division, which employs almost 500 people. "The arguments against going into UMTS are less numerous than before," he said. Bouygues Telecom, France's third biggest mobile phone service operator, did not bid when the government first offered UMTS licences in Jan 2001. "We have a team working" on whether to apply, Pelisson said. The government has set a deadline of May 16 for applications for additional UMTS licences, after lowering the price for all licence holders. Concerning Bouygues Telecom's GPRS service, Pelisson said the company plans a launch a marketing campaign from end-September to mid-October. But he expects only a "very limited" transfer of GSM subscribers to GPRS before Christmas this year. an/hjp NNN Copyright AFX 2002, All Rights Reserved.
