Intel grabbed an 80.6% share of the PC market compared with AMD's 18.5% share, he said. If Intel processor sales for X-Box are included in the tally, Intel's market share was 81.2%, compared to 18% for AMD, he told EBN.

Intel Corp. ramped up low-end Celeron processor sales in the fourth quarter to gain back some PC market share lost to AMD, according to Dean McCarron, preisdent of Mercury Research, Scottsdale, Ariz.

Intel grabbed an 80.6% share of the PC market compared with AMD's 18.5% share, he said. If Intel processor sales for X-Box are included in the tally, Intel's market share was 81.2%, compared to 18% for AMD, he told EBN.

McCarron said the increased Intel market share apparently came from a strong push in low-price Celeron processors, which ended up making Intel overall processor ASPs for the quarter flat. "By contrast, AMD, even though losing some market share, essentially increased its ASPs sharply by selling a higher mix of higher price Athlon processors, even though their market share declined. The net result wasn't all that bad for AMD," he expalined.

Dan, Re: "Your numbers would indicate a market of 42 million PC CPUs for last quarter."

Congratulations on your 3rd grade math skills. That is indeed how large the market was, and Intel was able to provide over 34 million of those CPUs.

Re: "But according to Dataquest the number is less than 36 million"

Their's was the first estimate. Global sales aren't tracked well enough to get immediate results. Sales numbers continue to get revised even months after the quarter ends. I bet even Dataquest has newer numbers at this point.
