Outflows from Tech Sector Funds:
Yes, these fund flows are a contrarian indicator, but there's a catch. With the benefit of hindsight, we'll see that the Nasdaq low or lows followed closely after the worst $ outflows from Tech Sector funds. There are a couple of problems with Sector data, however. Its difficult to get the data every week without a subscription to AMG or Trim Tabs, both of which are very expensive. You've got to have every week's data to make use of it. Can you find out how the recent $-178 million figure compares to comparable figures for the mid-Sept period? Additionally, one only knows with hindsight how extreme the outflows will get. For example, inflows into Tech Funds peaked at $+2.8 BILLION per week in early March of 2000, and dropped to a $-750 million per week in early April of 2000. My longest leading indicator on the Nasdaq (1.5 to 2.5 months) suggests that it could erode into early Spring at least.
